SANSUI

Established in Japan in 1947 as an electric transformer manufacturer, Sansui's early hi-fi products sounded quite exceptional, but their styling was classically Japanese, limiting their market appeal in the West. Later models were styled to be a bit more 'neutral' but still retained hints of their Japanese heritage, such as the Kumiko fretwork grilles on many of the speakers. Sansui imported JBL speakers into the Japanese market for some years, so their engineers became very familiar with JBL's philosophy of speaker design, employing cast chassis drivers, horn tweeters, serious crossovers, and acoustic lenses on many models. During their heyday, Sansui built some delightful hi-fi speakers, including...

  • SP35 - Smallest of the Sansui family. 2-way system. 200mm LF with 19mm dome HF. Slightly curved lattice grilles on vented dark walnut enclosures. The thin foam modesty screen behind the grilles disintegrates with age.
  • SP200 – Mid-size 3-way. 300mm LF, 2x 130mm MF, and 2x small round HF horns. 40w max. Dark walnut enclosure with fretwork grilles. 73 litre dark walnut enclosure.
  • SP1000 – Small 3-way. Vented dark walnut enclosure. 250mm LF, 160mm sealed-back MF, and 2x small HF horns.
  • SP2000 - Large 4/5-way. 300mm LF, 150mm sealed LMF. 110mm sealed MF. 2x small HF horns, and a small supertweeter.
  • SP2500 – Large 3-way. 300mm LF, 2x’ 130mm MF in plastic cavities, cross-firing, and 2x HF horns behind an acoustical lens, between the MF units. Wonderful sound, from a lovely dark walnut enclosure.
  • SP3000 – Large 4-way. 380mm LF, 165mm LMF. 50x155 MF horn, mounted vertically. 2x 50mm HF, and a small horn for VHF.
  • SP3200A – Large 4-way. 330mm (13”) LF, 165mm MF, and horn HF. Also sported a pair of ‘ambience’ horns pointing up, illuminating the wall behind. 78 litre dark walnut enclosure. Wonderful sounding speakers.
  • SP3500 – Large 4-way, 6-speaker system, similar to SP2500. 340mm LF, 2x MF, cross firing. Vertical HF horn behind a tall, skinny serpentine acoustical lens, and 2x small horn supertweeters. The vertical-firing horn may have offended 'purists' but added an amazing ambience and sense of size to the reproduced image.
  • SP3700 – Large 3-way. 350mm LF, 160mm MF, and HF horn with an acoustical lens. Up-firing 'ambience' horns.
  • SP5500X – Large 3-way. 380mm LF, 2x 130mm MF, and vertical 160x50mm HF horn, with a small supertweeter. 86 litre dark walnut enclosure..
  • SPX8000 – Large 4-way. 400mm LF, 2x 130mm MF, and 160x50 HF horn, with 2x small supertweeter horns.
  • SPX9700 – Very large 4-way, 7 driver system. 400mm LF, 165mm MF, 2x 160x50 HF horns with ‘vanes’ across mouth, and 3x 50mm cone supertweeters.
  • SP-L800 - Very large 2-way system. 2x 300mm LF drivers, (not identical), and a horn HF with large acoustical lens. More conventional enclosure, in medium walnut with grey cloth grilles. Bi-amp style crossover.
